The Heritage of the Skua® Brand
The Skua® brand was originally created in 1980 through a collaboration between Tony Murphy of Focalpoint and Mr. Deputer of Belgium, who shared a vision to better protect delicate and valuable optical instruments.
Their solution was the first purpose-built, close-fitting protective stay-on case for spotting scopes a design that became known simply as the Skua Case.
Focalpoint secured the exclusive UK rights to the Skua brand and, under Tony Murphy’s direction, went on to develop a wide range of protective cases for leading premium optics brands including Leica and Swarovski.
When Focalpoint was later acquired by the current owners, the Skua brand was further enhanced to reflect Focalpoint’s commitment to quality and sustainability. All modern Skua products are designed and manufactured exclusively in the UK using UK-sourced materials, marking a return to the brand’s premium roots.
This new era is signified by the updated Gold & Green Skua® logo, while earlier products can be recognised by their original white sewn-on patch featuring a silhouette of a skua seabird.
Focalpoint Optics retains all rights to the Skua name, branding, and associated product designs. While trademark registration status may change over time, Skua® remains a proprietary Focalpoint brand.
Any products offered for sale under the name “Skua” that are not supplied by Focalpoint may not be an official or endorsed Skua product, and customers are advised to exercise caution when purchasing items claiming to carry the Skua name.
Use of the Skua® name, branding, or logos remains subject to permission from Focalpoint Optics Ltd.
Parties interested in licensing or acquiring rights to the Skua brand are invited to contact Focalpoint directly for discussion.
